Definition (Characteristic)

The characteristic of a field $\mathbb{F}$ is the smallest natural number $n\in\mathbb{N}$ such that $$\underbrace{1+\dots+1}_{n}=0$$ if no such $n$ exists then we say $\mathbb{F}$ has characteristic zero.
