Let $\mathbf{A}$ be a $k\times k$ matrix of real elements. We define the trace of $\mathbf{A}$ to be $$\mathrm{Tr}(\mathbf{A}):=\sum_{i=1}^{k}a_{ii}$$i.e. the sum of the diagonal elements of $\mathbf{A}$.
