Definition (Codeword)
Given a fixed length or variable length code, a source alphabet X\mathcal{X}X, a codebook C\mathcal{C}C, and an encoder f:Xn→C∗f:\mathcal{X}^n\to\mathcal{C}^*f:Xn→C∗ where C∗\mathcal{C}^*C∗ is the set of all finite-length sequences over C\mathcal{C}C. A codeword for a symbol xn∈Xnx^n\in\mathcal{X}^nxn∈Xn is the encoded source nnn-tuple f(xn)f(x^n)f(xn).
